Discussion Prompts/Questions:

  • *Note: This book has a lot of words for preschoolers! You’re unlikely to want to read everything from the text. However, it’s the perfect book for a picture walk, discussion, and paraphrasing.
  • On each page
    • “What do you see?”
    • “What are they showing us with the rock pictures?”
    • “Are these pictures showing happy feelings, or sad feelings? Are people feeling safe or scared?”
    • “Every family should have a safe and happy home. How are you safe in your house? How are you happy in your house?”

Follow-Up Activity:

  • Whether indoors or outside, encourage students to use rocks (or other nature-based loose parts) to make a picture of a family that is safe and happy. If they want to do so, they could also be encouraged to make a picture of a family travelling.
